Computer Repair Services
Having trouble with your computer? Do you have a broken component or is your machine running slowly? Do you have a virus? Let the eCenter help you! Our technicians and experienced volunteers can diagnose and fix most computer software and hardware issues. Financial assistance is available for low income individuals and non-profit organizations.
Policies:
CRT Monitor Policy
The eCenter will charge $5 to accept any working or non-working CRT monitor. This fee is charged for a variety of reasons. First, CRT monitors contain an assortment of hazardous chemicals that make them costly to dispose of in an environmentally responsible manner. Second, because of CRT monitors’ weight and size, they are particularly difficult to handle and store in our facility’s limited space. For a free CRT recycling alternative, if you are a resident of Tompkins County, please bring your monitors to Tompkins County Solid Waste, located at 122 Commercial Ave. Ithaca, NY 14850 from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday – Saturday.
Computer Equipment Warranty Policy
The eCenter warrants to the customer that the hardware system of your computer equipment (but not software) will be free from defects in material and/or workmanship for 30 days from the date of the sales receipt. During the warranty period, the eCenter will correct any defects in material or workmanship, or any failure of the hardware system to conform to as-purchased specifications. Acts of God, mishandling and post-purchase user add-ons (hardware or software) are not covered, nor is lost computer data. Any replacement parts/products shall be new or serviceably used, and are warranted for the remainder of the original warranty. This warranty period is not extended as a result of purchasing any additional parts/products from the eCenter or upgrading the product. Warranties are not transferable and apply only to the original purchaser. The customer must promptly notify the eCenter if there is a defect in material or workmanship. The eCenter must receive notice of all defects before the expiration of the warranty period. We would like to emphasize that our warranty covers hardware, and is neither a software warranty nor a satisfaction warranty.
Items sold “As Is” are not covered by this warranty. While these items have been inspected and known defects noted on the tag, they are not covered by warranty because of age or difficulty obtaining parts.
Repairs Under Warranty
In order for warranted items to be repaired, the customer must present the original receipt and product specifications sheet. Any item returned on warranty must be inspected and any problem verified by one of our technicians. Tamper proof seals must be in place. The eCenter will first attempt to fix the problem through repair. While we do our very best to preserve your data during the repair process, we cannot guarantee that all your data will remain intact. If data must be erased for a successful repair, you will be contacted first and your consent will be obtained before any data is purposefully erased. If the computer equipment cannot be repaired, the eCenter will replace the equipment with a product of equal worth and quality. If no suitable replacements can be found, the eCenter will issue store credit for the value specified on the customer’s original receipt.
Data Wiping Services
The eCenter takes your personal privacy very seriously. That’s why we offer three different options to ensure that personal data is securely erased following a computer donation.
Standard Data Wiping Service - FREE
All hard drives will be erased using a secure, three-pass rewrite. This process will erase all personal data, software, operating systems etc., rendering your data virtually unrecoverable. Most experts agree that a three-pass rewrite is a safe and adequate option for most consumers and businesses.
Department of Defense Data Wiping Standard - $15.00
Upon the request of the costumer, hard drives can be erased according to the Department of Defense standard. This process is the most rigorous data destruction procedure currently available, requiring seven passes of the hard drive, with each pass formed of three different data wipes. Data erased according to the Department of Defense standard cannot be pieced back together using advanced technology. This service is not recommended for typical customers. Only customers with extremely sensitive data should opt for this data destruction method. Documentation can be provided certifying Department of Defense data destruction, if requested by the customer. Prices may vary for donations of five computers or more.
Physical Hard Drive Destruction - $25.00
Upon the request of the costumer, hard drives will be shredded, physically destroying all personal data. While this is the most secure data destruction option, we do not recommend this process as it creates electronic waste and destroys a reusable product. Only customers with extremely sensitive data should opt for this form of data destruction. Documentation will be provided by our certified contractor to assure that your hard drive has been shredded, as required by law.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance for any of our services is available upon request. To qualify for our financial assistance program, a customer need only demonstrate current participation in a federal or state aid program (Food Stamps, Medicaid, WIC, HEAP, Reduced School Lunch, etc.) or demonstrate financial hardship through another credible means. Service fees and prices will be adjusted on an individual basis.
